Rocky Mountain Children’s Choir to Denver Children’s Choir
Since 1996 The Choir has intentionally and persistently sought Denver children from all walks of life to be a part of its program: children from different cultures, races and religions; children who speak different languages and children from different Denver neighborhoods; children who, if not for the Choir, would not have known each other.
And through the simple act of singing together the most amazing thing happens: children who might be hesitant about sitting with someone whose skin is a different color, or uncertain about someone who wears a headscarf or who speaks with an accent, work together at the Choir to figure out just what that alto note is in measure 5, or how to sing a perfect “ah” vowel with the singers around them so it sounds like one voice…high-fiving one another when they get it right.
Children in the Choir learn about music and singing and sight-reading. But more importantly, through the act of harmonizing with one another, they learn to appreciate and respect those things that make each of us unique; the things which make our incredible city of Denver so vibrant. Who would have imagined back in 1996 when the Choir began that its mission to teach children, through music, to respect and appreciate diversity would be needed more today, in 2017, than it was in 1996.
Why a name change? The Rocky Mountain Children’s Choir, honestly, has always been THE DENVER CHILDREN’S CHOIR. 98% of the singers in the Choir live in Denver. 95% of the performances the Choir gives take place in Denver. 100% of its rehearsals and choir programs are in Denver.
To further our commitment to Denver, The Denver Children’s Choir is excited to announce the launch of a new program this fall; the Denver Neighborhood Choir Program. This program will begin in 5 different Denver neighborhoods – Harvey Park, Capitol Hill, Chaffee Park, Hilltop, and
Park Hill. The Choir will invest in these communities by not just offering one after school training choir, but by offering multiple levels of choirs in each location so that singers can easily advance in choir level as their skill increases. This will allow the Choir to better and more thoroughly serve the musical needs of each singer.
The Choir is particularly pleased to be partnering with selected DPS schools in these neighborhoods to offer additional in-school programs, during the school day, to children who do not have music in their school, or schools who wish to supplement their existing music programs.
Ever committed to bringing children together across neighborhood boundaries, the neighborhood choirs will regularly participate in workshops and performances where they can come together, join musical forces, and share together their love of singing and brighten their communities with their harmony. We are excited about our new Neighborhood Choir Model and hope to replicate this program throughout the city of Denver.
The Denver Children’s Choir will continue to have a “central location” where its most advanced ensembles will rehearse. But the exciting news is that for the first time the Choir will have a true HOME, where they will not only rehearse its advanced ensembles, but where the Choir will have their administrative offices as well. This has been a long-time dream for the choir. The new Denver Children’s Choir’s HOME will be at the First Mennonite Church, located near 8th and Speer.
The Choir has supported and enriched the city of Denver for the past 21 years by building community amongst its youngest citizens. It has provided music education to city neighborhoods that do not have such musical opportunities, and is committing to do this more thoroughly through its Neighborhood Choir Program. It has sung songs from the different cultures and in the different languages of Denver’s citizens, songs that celebrate the rich diversity of our city’s population. The singers of the Denver Children’s Choir may not be old enough to vote – but when they sing songs of hope for what their community and their world can be… they do feel that they have a voice.
This is an exciting time for the Denver Children’s Choir, as it looks forward to its next 21 years and beyond. We are recommitting to serving all Denver children – engaging its youngest citizens as they learn about music and about each other. We are recommitting to creating a place where children can celebrate harmony and their humanity.
